Today, Philipsburg bustles with a host of duty-free branded shops, cafés, boutiques and attractions. Downtown Philipsburg is only a few minutes' walk from the Sonesta Beach Resort. Front Street, the main thoroughfare, is lined with duty-free shops that offer everything from Italian leather goods and Japanese cameras to local handicrafts. Narrow alleyways lead to charming arcades and courtyards filled with flowers. Visitors will also find examples of traditional West Indian architecture, such as pastel-colored houses with second-story verandas overlooking the street. The Court House is an excellent example of colonial architecture in Philipsburg. It was built in 1793 and is one of Front Street's the most prominent landmark buildings. Saint Maarten Museum provides visitors with an excellent introduction to local history, since the time of the first island settlers. Fort Amsterdam bears witness to Philipsburg’s strategic importance in St. Maarten’s history. Built in 1631 on a peninsula between Great Bay and Little Bay, Fort Amseterdam was the first Dutch military outpost in the Caribbean. Other attractions: today, Philipsburg combines its historical legacy with 20th century excitement.
