Sonesta scuba diving - a reason for your vacation
The waters of St. Maarten / St. Martin and the surrounding islands offer very interesting and varied scuba diving at moderate depths, which means easy and relaxed diving and snorkeling. Besides numerous varieties of reef fish, you are likely to see Great Barracudas, Tarpon, Flying Gurnard, Moray Eels, Snake Eels (there are no sea snakes in the Caribbean), Stingrays, Spotted Eagle Rays, Manta Rays, Sharks - both Nurse and Reef, Turtles, Lobster, and a lot of macro critters. There are numerous well established coral reef systems with a wide variety of beautiful soft and hard corals in pristine condition. Operating out of The Scuba Shop in Simpson Bay and their head office in Bobby's Marina, Dive Safaris offers the best Diving Trips with the friendliest staff (they even wash out your dive mask for you), Nitrox and Scuba Courses up to Dive Master level. Interested in a dive course? - Dive Safaris in Simpson Bay is the first dive shop on St. Maarten to offer students Suunto dive computers to use during any scuba course at no extra charge. Dive Safaris has been successfully feeding the sharks around St Maarten since 1998. During this dive, you will have the chance to see 15 to 30 sharks being fed by our professional feeders. Most of the sharks attending the feeding are Caribbean Reef Sharks and Sharp Nose sharks ranging from 3 to 8 feet in length. The dive lasts around 30-40min. and the depth of the dive site is 55' /17m. You will need to be at least a certified diver and have dived within the last 2 years to take part in this dive. Proselyte is one of the most famous dive site. In 1801, a British frigate coming from St. Kitts with supplies ran into the reef. Both Capt. and Navigator were down below and the helmsman screwed up the directions. She drifted into Man O War Shoal and, to stop her from sinking, the crew cut off the masts and threw them, with the huge anchors and the cannons, overboard. She sunk anyway... All survived... The Capt. and Navigator were court-martialed. Since she was made out of wood, you will not see the ship itself as it is now part of the reef but you will see the 13 coral encrusted cannons and 3 huge anchors.
